100,000,000 Satoshi = 1 BTC

The Divisibility of Bitcoin Eight Decimals
Bitcoin: From Unit to Fraction - Meet the Satoshi

While the Bitcoin White Paper describes a revolutionary P2P electronic cash system, the fundamental unit of value within that system is crucial for its usability and future.

The Divisibility of Bitcoin: Eight Decimals

Bitcoin was designed to be highly divisible, a key factor in its ability to function as global money. The base unit, 1 Bitcoin (BTC), can be divided up to eight decimal places.

This means that, unlike many fiat currencies which are typically divided into only two decimals (like the cent or penny), Bitcoin allows for a precision of up to eight zeros after the decimal point.

This fractional capability ensures that, even if the value of 1 BTC skyrockets, daily and low-value transactions will remain possible.

The Smallest Unit: The Satoshi (Sat)

The smallest, indivisible fraction of Bitcoin is known as the Satoshi (Sat), named in honor of its creator's pseudonym: Satoshi Nakamoto.

Definition: 1 Satoshi is the unit that results from dividing 1 Bitcoin 100 million times. It is the Bitcoin unit with the value of 0.00000001 BTC.
Equivalency: 1 Bitcoin equals 100,000,000 (one hundred million) Satoshis.

1 BTC ÷ 100,000,000 = 1 Sat
